Overview
For business organizations outside of the United States, a tax ID must first be submitted and verified in order to access any of IonQ’s Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) features. This tax information ensures payment transactions are taxed correctly and invoices can include the tax ID.Tax requirements by region
Your Organization country (configured during account setup) determines the applicable tax rules:- Countries with Value-Added Tax (VAT) (including EU member states, United Kingdom, Switzerland, and Canada):
- Business: Must provide a valid VAT ID, which must pass an automated verification process before being allowed to add a payment method or purchase credit.
- Individual: Individuals outside of the United States cannot purchase PAYG credits.
- The United States:
- Tax IDs are not required to purchase PAYG credits.
Self-serve credit purchasing is not available in all countries or regions. If purchasing is unavailable for your organization’s registered country or entity type, the credit purchase page is disabled.
Enter tax information
To enter country and tax information in Organization Settings:- In the left navigation bar, under Organization, click Settings.
- In the Business tax information section, select the Organization country. Then, select your Entity Type (Business or Individual).
- If a VAT number is required, select the Tax ID type, then enter the VAT number.
- Click Save and verify.
Real-time VAT verification
When a business in a VAT country submits a VAT ID, the system automatically checks the ID against official tax authority records. Verification typically completes within seconds but can sometimes take longer. The verification status is displayed on the Spend page and in Organization Settings. If we are unable to verify your VAT ID, you can re-submit it for verification from the Spend page or Organizational Settings.Tax IDs on invoices
Each credit purchase generates an invoice, available from the Download invoice link in the Credit table on the Spend page. If your organization has a verified tax ID on file at the time of purchase, it’s included on the invoice. For VAT-registered businesses, this supports reverse charge treatment where applicable.IonQ can’t advise on your organization’s tax obligations. For questions about whether your organization should register for VAT, or how a purchase should be treated for tax purposes, consult your tax advisor.
